No sound/audio in Wine (1.4, 1.5, newer)

When upgrading to a recent version of WINE (>= 1.4), you may end up without sound. winecfg has "Selected driver: (none)" in the Audio tab. Before running around, recompiling umptheenth time various wine versions and checking dependencies (like I did), first verify its registry. As noted in http://wiki.winehq.org/Sound there may be an invalid or empty entry in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Drivers]. Run regedit, delete the Audio entry from that key, run winecfg again and it might just work.

There are other possible causes for this problem, but if sound works in other apps, check this first.

Civilization IV works great! with WINE 1.5.3. Railroads! works too, but performance is poorer.

  1. That was worked, thanks. I've been having this problem for a few years now and never understood why audio wouldn't work.
